I had never paid much attention to ribbons until a few months back. They are very much a result of dress reform in the late 19th century. You can spot them fairly often in the early 20th century but their popularity seems to have peaked in the 1950s. What’s more it is worn by the fashion forwards and in the movies often seen on protagonists who are college educated.  The doubled up plait or at any event styling the hair to position ribbons is more popular in the 50s than the “do choti” (double plaits) of the 1940s (X, X).
